Doctor Ed's Equine Veterinary Services is proud to serve Tamworth region, the Hunter Valley, Armidale, Newcastle, and Walcha. We bring a compassionate and caring side of veterinary medicine to each of our clients and their animals. Each animal within our care is treated as one of our own.

Our primary focus is on equine veterinary medicine and dentistry. We also cater to smaller animals and livestock. Our staff strives to give the best care possible to each patient and we are committed to the animals we look after as well as our clients.  
Doctor Ed’s Veterinary Services is an ambulatory Equine Veterinary practice owned and operated by Dr Doug Edlington BVSc.

Dr Doug Edlington

After graduating as a Veterinarian from The University of Queensland in 1994 Doug started a research master degree in fertility in Bos indicus cattle whilst working in mixed practice at St George, QLD During this time, he gained valuable skills in all aspects of Equine, Bovine and Small Animal medicine, including orthopaedic surgery.
In 1996 Doug purchased a mixed practice in Glen Innes where he established the Glen Innes Equine Reproduction Centre. The centre stood up to 13 stallions at peak times and covered all aspects of equine reproductive medicine including artificial insemination, embryo transfer and semen collection. During this time Doug made his first trip to the US completing an externship programme at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky USA.
In 2003 Doug took up a position as resident Veterinarian on a thoroughbred stud in Queensland where he managed to gain valuable skills in the field of Thoroughbred stud medicine and in 2004 he was employed as a locum vet at Lark Hills Vets, Western Australia where he managed the reproductive unit.

A strong interest in Equine Dentistry led him to take up an internship with Doctor Jack Easley in 2005 (Kentucky USA) where he developed valuable skills in Basic and Advanced Equine Dentistry. 
After this Doug joined the team at Satur Veterinary Hospital in Scone where his main focus was on Equine reproduction and stud medicine as well as Advanced Equine Dentistry and surgery.
In 2007 Doug became Director of Doctor Ed’s Equine Veterinary Services and started to perform contract work for many clients – some highlights include providing services to the elite polo ponies at Ellerston and valuable referral dentistry work at Newcastle Equine Hospital as well as looking after beloved kids pony club horses.  

In his spare time Doug enjoys competing on his horses Django, Herbie and Kitty Cat in Reined Cow Horse events.
Since 2011 Doug and his wife Lara operate Doctor Ed’s Equine Veterinary Services in Tamworth with a focus on equine reproduction, sports and performance horse medicine and advanced equine dentistry. 
 

Lara​ ​Andersen​

Qualified​ ​Veterinary​ ​Nurse​ ​and​ ​Practice​ ​Manager

Lara completed her Diploma of Veterinary nursing at a mixed animal practice in Germany in 2006. 
 As her passion are horses she took up a positon as a track rider at Stud Faehrhof, one of Germanys leading thoroughbred studs. During this time she gained valuable horse handling skills whils t working in the Pre- training stable under supervision of Monty Roberts. In 2007 Lara travelled to Australia where she worked on several thoroughbred studs as a stud groom in the broodmare barn as well as in yearling preparation and sales. As her whole life revolves around horses, Lara always gives 100% percent to make sure all patients are well looked after and cared for. 
Lara joined the team at Doctor Ed’s Equine Veterinary Services as a Veterinary Nurse in 2011 and took over the role as Practice Manager in 2015.
Her spare time she spends around her much-loved animals and training her horses Frosty and Curly to compete in Reined Cow Horse events.

Sarah McMahon

Fully Qualified Veterinary Nurse

 Sarah started with us in March 2024 and has become an extremely valuable member of our team. 
She brings with her an extensive amount of experience in Equine and Small Animal Nursing as well as customer service.
She brightens up everyone's days with her friendly, happy and caring personality. 
In her spare time Sarah enjoys  training and riding her horses Lou, Hero and Romeo.
Sarah is a passionate equine enthusiast with a competitive reining background. 










  

Ellie McNaughton

Junior Veterinary Nurse in training


Ellie has been with us since July 2023 and ads to our team an incredible amount of horse handling skills as well as an outstanding work ethic. There is no job too big or small for her. In her spare time Ellie trains and shows her own horses in Cow Horse events. It's safe to say that she spends more time in the saddle than on the ground.

Joe McNaughton

Joe started with us mid 2023 when he did his year 11 work placement.

He is a talented, smart and hard working young man with a strong  background in horse handling. His calm and friendly personality is much appreciated by animals and people especially on the hectic days.

Riding and training horses as well as training working dogs are Joe's main activities in his spare time.
